Let me start by saying I do respect Dr. McDougall. He was one of the better medical doctors out there that didn't fear carbohydrates and wasn't brainwashed by the Paleo BS that dominates many medical doctors today (of those who actually adopt some kind of health paradigm).
I was surprised to see just how many people in the Health Community on YouTube report his death so quickly. It is reassuring to see this community care for and appreciate many of the pioneers of health, knowledge, and science in an era of stupidity, deception, and greed. I read that Dr. McDougall had a stroke at the young age of 18, but lived to the age of 77. Many have argued that Dr. McDougall's plant-based lifestyle didn't enhance his overall lifespan, but these people make the same mistake that they attributed to Hilde Larsen. That grave mistake is that these people look at the total number of years one lives on this planet rather than their quality of life and vitality during their limited days. Hilde was absolutely beaming with vitality, even if she died sooner with a stroke. She would have died much sooner if she didn't adopt the fruitarian lifestyle.
The same principle is applied to Dr. McDougall. He aged pretty well despite his imperfect diet. That fact should be commended.
Yes, Dr. McDougall's starch-based diet is absolutely inferior to a fruit-based one, and it's sad that Dr. McDougall shared the same phobia of fruit that many of the Paleo doctors do, but at the end of the day starches are better to consume over proteins. Vegetables with grains is still a decent enough diet if you avoid all the protein and other junk found in the standard American diet. Beggars can't be choosers, and the Starch Solution diet is better than the paleo diet, take that for what it's worth.
I would argue that Dr. McDougall would have flourished even more on a fruit-dominant diet, but it's neither here nor there. Starches are acidic, gloopy, sticky, and unfit for human consumption. If you absolutely must have something starchy, focus on corn, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Stay away from any and all grains, no matter how cheap and easy on the wallet they may be. The same applies to all legumes and nightshades. Choose your food groups wisely.
At the end of the day, I want to commemorate a medical doctor that actually promoted a plant based approach. He has my respect.
